Bookkeeping and financials for a landscaping or lawn care company
Most landscaping owners know revenue and guess at everything else. That is survivable in a good spring and fatal in a wet one. The number that runs this business is revenue per crew hour, and you cannot see it without clean books and honest job costing. Companies that start tracking it usually find one service quietly losing money, most often mulch installs priced off a competitor's flyer.
Seasonality makes it worse. Cash arrives March through November and leaves December through February, so a company can look profitable all year and still be short in January. A thirteen week cash forecast turns that from an annual panic into a planning number.
The mistake is a chart of accounts that lumps all revenue into one line. Split it by service, and by maintenance versus install, or you cannot tell which crew to grow. Two weeks in, the deliverable is a clean prior month with margin by service.
